Brett McPeters
Brett has been a goperformance client for two years. He’s a junior baseball player at Whitewater. Brett is our Athlete of the Month because he demonstrates perseverance, determination and has the attitude of a conqueror.
When Brett originally came to goperformance he wanted to improve his 60-yard time, vertical, shuttle and broad jump. He wanted to get stronger so he could throw the ball with more speed and velocity. He wanted faster arm and bat speed.
In April 2017, Brett was involved in a freak accident at his home. He was leaning on a glass table. The glass gave way and Brett fell through the table. He was airlifted to the hospital and doctors weren’t sure he’d even pull through. He had emergency surgery, spent several days in the hospital and following his release, started physical therapy.
With every athlete, there’s a time where the odds are against them. They have to make a decision on whether or not they will press on and break the glass ceiling or simply call it a day. Brett’s odds were certainly not in his favor. His throwing arm incurred the trauma from the fall. Just a few short months after his near fatal injury, Brett began training at goperformance again. He returned with an “I will” mindset. He came back appreciative and happy to even be in the gym. He had a grateful heart that he was even able to do anything.
Since his return, he’s gotten stronger, faster and more agile. His numbers are below:
Broad Jump
7 feet 8 inches to 8 feet 5 inches
5-10-5
4.7 seconds to 4.43
40-Yard Dash
5.06 seconds to 4.83
Vertical
23 inches to 29 inches
Brett’s possesses a humble confidence. He’s not arrogant or showy, but he shows up to work hard, compete with the other athletes in the class and against himself. He’s encouraging to other athletes and continues to push himself to refine and master the details. His desire is to play at the collegiate level and I think that his diligence and tenacity will pay off to see that dream come to fruition. (Coach Lane)
He just wrapped up a trip to Florida where he was personally invited to attend a Baseball Showcase. He performed really well there.
From Brett:
You’ve trained at go off and on for several years, what keeps you coming back?
I love coming to goperformance to train because I like being able to have fun while working hard and getting better. Also, all the trainers have pushed me and encouraged me to work harder and get better every day I come.
What performance improvements have you noticed since training at goperformance?
goperformance has really enhanced my athleticism and all-around speed and strength. It has really helped me become a better baseball player.
After your injury in the Spring, did you think you’d be back training and playing baseball? What was your mindset?
When I first was injured I did not know if I was ever going to be able to play baseball or work out again. I was determined to move past that and work harder than I ever have before to make sure that I was able to continue to play, work out and get better.
What did you tell yourself the weeks/months following your accident?
I reminded myself repeatedly of all the professional athletes that had severe injuries and worked back to being even better than before their injury, that is exactly what I wanted to work toward.
What motivates you to work so hard?
I have always wanted to make it to the next level in baseball because it is what I live to do, and I knew that if I wasn’t working hard there was someone else out there working hard and could take my spot at the next level. So I plan to do everything I can to not let anyone out-work me.
Out of all the performance metrics that we have, what are you the most proud of?
I am the most proud of my improvements on the broad jump. I never used to be able to jump very high or far so I was excited once I started increasing my distance and was able to start jumping farther.
What are your plans for the next semester of training?
Baseball starts this spring so I plan to come as often as possible in the mornings before school so that I can keep increasing my athleticism and strength throughout this baseball season.
You are about to go to the UA Baseball Showcase, will you tell me a little about that experience and how you feel about going into it?
I was very excited to be able to attend the Under Armor/Baseball Factory National Tournament and to get better as a baseball player. It was an incredible experience because I was able to meet and compete with players from all over the country. I was also able to work with and learn from some of the best coaches and recruiters in the country. It was one of the best experiences I will have as a baseball player.
Questions for Bill and Marci McPeters:
Why did you choose goperformance for your son?
We chose goperformance for Brett because of Lane’s philosophy and knowledge around how to prepare and train athlete’s to maximize their potential and performance through speed, strength, agility, and flexibility to excel in whatever sport they are participating in. Also, I am impressed with how all the trainer’s at goperformance take a vested interest in the success of each athlete’s progression towards their goals.
What improvements have you noticed since he’s been training?
We have seen big improvements with Brett, really in every key area of fitness (strength, agility, speed and flexibility). His improvements have enhanced his ability to perform and compete to his highest potential.
Following Brett’s accident, how did you guys encourage him to pursue baseball and training again?
Well, we did not have to encourage him to pursue baseball and training again because he was very passionate to return to full strength as quickly as possible, so that he could continue to play. Honestly, we were trying to manage expectations throughout his recovery process so he would not think he could get back to training too soon.
Describe Brett’s determination and mindset when it comes to training and athletics.
Brett has a goal to play baseball in college, therefore he is committed to a training program that will help him achieve that goal
